Why SEO Companies Are A Waste Of Time

While they are companies out there that will do the right thing, I don’t think I have ever met one, they are very rare. Seo agencies or companies do nothing but cost everyone money. I like to think of traditional SEO like tobacco. Sure it’s legal and gives you a fix now, but it isn’t good for you or anyone near you in the long run.

1. They Focus On Back Links

Once the largest factor of SEO is now a dying factor. While back links still do carry weight, it is decreasing with every update the search engines make to their algorithm. If you have an SEO company say they will get you a lot of back links, this is a poor investment. Back links aren’t the future, social activity is.

2. Gaming The System

Search engines are there to find you the most relevant piece of information to the user. But instead of trying to make your site more relevant, they spend more time trying to manipulate the variables used in search engines to get to the top. Is that really how you want to position yourself?

3. They Damage Your Brand

One tactic for gaining back links involves commenting on other blogs, or just getting a link back any way they can. Do you really want your website address posted all over the Internet with a spammy looking message next to it. Not only do blog owners get annoyed, it means people who come across are most likely going to be less than impressed with your brand’s conduct.

4. Creating Irrelevant Results In Search Engines And Annoying Everyone

I have seen really great wedding invitation companies (ones featured in major magazines) be left pages down in search results because apparently a wedding invitation company with links from user profiles on Linux blogs and other forums is a more relevant search result. This is a classic example of gaming the system and making sure users don’t get the best results for their queries.

5. It Will Continue To Be An Expense Rather Than An Investment

Gaining back links with SEO keeps costing money and time. Other companies out there are doing it and you will continuously compete for link backs. Why not invest in content, engagement and serving your customers that will build a great brand over time and something that can not just be taken away by a Google update.

6. Social Metrics Are Increasingly Important

You may think why would I invest in content if the person with the most back links wins in the end anyway. This is where the tide is changing. The search engines know they can’t keep their current method going and people continuously find ways to gain a competitive advantage. Instead they are beginning to rely on people to provide the results. You know that you can detect BS a mile away online and so can most other online users. So when they click on a Facebook like button or tweet about something or press the Google +1 button, it is a solid recommendation. Search engines now are listening more than ever to the social activity on the web and this is only going to increase.
